Cement Dust and Cyanogen Permanently Present in Atmosphere of Ararat 04.04.2012
Every day the residents of Ararat down breathe in the mixture of cement dust enriched with sulfur dioxide, cyanic hydrogen, nitrogen oxides, iron, manganese, silicon, calcium and aluminium compounds...The sources of pollution are the cement plant, gold extraction plant, the plant for asbestos-cement constructions, lime-slaking workshop, asphalt workshop and open mines. As a result, Ararat has recorded such professional diseases as silicosis, pneumocolon, bronchitis, asthma, pleurisy etc. Under the data for 2004, 14% of the population suffered from chronic illneases and have disability category. The share of the children in the total number of disabled persons makes up 2,9%. "Many people are unaware of these problems. The cement plant has been operating since 1931, while people don't know what kind of impact it has on environment and what they breathe in. They were not interested in that,» said an activist from Ararat, while today the environmental issues are in the first place not only for us, but also for the whole world.' He thinks it's high time now for people to fight for their rights. Another activist said, 'We are putting all efforts for the cement plant to reduce their emissions and to place filters. If a survey is carried out, we will see that most population suffers from allergy.
